Justice Delayed: The FBI’s Newly Released Files on the Shanquella Robinson Case Ignite Fresh Outrage
For nearly three years, the tragic death of Shanquella Robinson has lingered in the public consciousness as one of the most shocking unsolved cases in recent memory. What began as a birthday getaway to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in October 2022, ended in a nightmare that left the 25-year-old Charlotte, North Carolina native dead—and her so-called friends, now infamously dubbed the “Cabo Six,” under intense scrutiny.
Now, after relentless advocacy from Shanquella’s family and mounting pressure from journalists and activists, the FBI has finally released heavily redacted documents in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. While the files stop short of a definitive conclusion, the revelations contained within them—eyewitness accounts, conflicting stories, and suspicious gaps—have reignited calls for justice and exposed just how much has been left unresolved.
A Vacation That Turned Deadly

On October 28, 2022, Shanquella departed Charlotte with a group of friends: Malik Dyer, Winter Donovan, Elise Hyatt, Daejhanae Jackson, Khalil Cook, and Nazir Wiggins. The trip was marketed as a celebration, but within 24 hours, everything spiraled out of control.
The next day, Khalil—who was reportedly Shanquella’s best friend—called her mother back home. He claimed that Shanquella had fallen ill from alcohol poisoning after a night of drinking. Initially, her mother accepted this explanation, believing it was nothing more than a tragic accident. But hours later, Khalil phoned again, saying paramedics were trying to resuscitate her. By 3:00 p.m. on October 29, Shanquella was pronounced dead.
The official Mexican death certificate would later tell a very different story. Far from alcohol poisoning, the cause of death was listed as severe spinal cord injury and atlas luxation—a dislocation of the neck vertebrae at the base of the skull. That kind of injury does not result from drinking too much. It suggested violent trauma.
The Video That Changed Everything
Not long after her death, a disturbing video surfaced on social media. It showed Shanquella being viciously attacked while naked by one of the Cabo Six, later identified as Daejhanae Jackson. Importantly, Shanquella did not fight back—she appeared defenseless, absorbing the blows without resistance.
Even more disturbing was the reaction of the others. Instead of stepping in to help, they stood by filming and even mocking her. Khalil, the same “friend” who phoned her mother, was heard urging, “Quella, can you at least fight back?”
The video shattered the alcohol poisoning narrative and gave the world its first undeniable proof that something sinister had happened. Reports later emerged that Winter Donovan may have delivered the fatal blow, slamming Shanquella into a wall, causing the catastrophic neck injuries listed in the autopsy.
The FBI Files: What They Reveal
The newly released FBI documents, though heavily redacted, confirm much of what the public already suspected—and hint at even darker truths. Among the findings:
Eyewitness Testimony: A man walked into the FBI’s Charlotte office on November 9, 2022, less than two weeks after the death, claiming he believed Shanquella had been murdered. He reported seeing photos of her body, describing bruises that looked like she had been stomped on.
Conflicting Accounts: According to the files, the Cabo Six initially told authorities she had been drinking heavily and hit her head on a toilet. Yet, physical evidence and autopsy results contradicted those claims.
Missing Cameras: The same witness suggested the villa had cameras, yet none were recovered in the investigation. This has fueled speculation that the group may have removed surveillance equipment to cover their tracks.
Phone Search: The FBI searched Shanquella’s phone, but what they discovered was fully redacted in the released files—leaving the public to wonder what damning evidence may be hidden from view.
Perhaps most significantly, Mexican prosecutors quickly classified the case as a femicide—a gender-based homicide—issuing an arrest warrant for Daejhanae Jackson. Yet despite the Interpol alerts and formal extradition requests, the U.S. has not extradited her or any of the others.
Family Pressure and the Civil Lawsuit

Shanquella’s family has been the driving force behind keeping this case alive. Her mother and sister have spoken out repeatedly, demanding accountability from both the Cabo Six and U.S. authorities.
In their most recent move, the family filed a civil lawsuit not only against the six individuals who accompanied Shanquella to Mexico but also against the U.S. Department of State and the FBI. The lawsuit accuses federal agencies of dragging their feet and failing to act, despite overwhelming evidence.
Her mother said in a public statement:
“We need justice for Shanquella Robinson. This has been two years, and there’s no reason that no one has been arrested yet. The lack of justice serves as a painful reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by young Black women when they seek adventure in unfamiliar places.”
It was only after this lawsuit was filed that the FBI suddenly released the long-awaited documents—a move many see as an attempt to appease the family rather than a genuine step toward justice.
Why Has There Been No Extradition?
This is the question at the heart of the outrage. Mexican authorities did their part, issuing a warrant and classifying the case as a homicide. Yet U.S. officials have hesitated.
Legal experts suggest the problem may lie in whether U.S. courts believe the Mexican case is strong enough. If the U.S. feels that evidence from Mexico is not airtight, extradition becomes unlikely. However, critics argue this hesitation smacks of indifference and political convenience.
Some also point out that if a U.S. citizen commits homicide abroad, the Department of Justice has the authority to prosecute domestically under federal law. Yet nearly three years later, no such charges have been brought.
The Public’s Waning Patience
When the case first broke in 2022, it sparked massive social media outrage. The video of Shanquella being beaten went viral, and hashtags demanding justice trended for weeks. But as time dragged on, public attention waned.
Now, with the FBI files finally out, the case has resurfaced in national headlines. Activists and supporters say they refuse to let it fade again, warning that if the U.S. government refuses to act, it sends a dangerous message: that young Black women can be brutally murdered abroad without consequence.
More Than a Case—A Symbol

The death of Shanquella Robinson is more than just a homicide case. It has become a symbol of how systemic neglect, slow-moving bureaucracy, and lack of accountability continue to fail marginalized communities.
It’s about trust—trust betrayed by friends who were supposed to protect her, and trust eroded in institutions that are supposed to ensure justice.
What Comes Next?
As of now, the FBI’s release of documents has not translated into arrests or extradition. The Cabo Six remain free, living their lives while Shanquella’s family continues to grieve without closure.
The question is whether this renewed wave of attention will finally push authorities into action—or whether the files are nothing more than a smokescreen, a token gesture to quiet critics while the case continues to stall.
For the Robinson family, justice delayed is justice denied. Nearly three years later, the world waits for the day when the promises of accountability finally match the evidence already in plain sight.
