The video details the bizarre and legendary tale of Mel’s Hole, a supposed bottomless pit in Ellensburg, Washington, made famous by multiple appearances on Art Bell’s Coast to Coast AM. The host, a fan of the show, shares the details of the story, concluding that while compelling, it is ultimately a hoax that spiraled out of control.
The Mysteries of the Hole
The legend begins with Mel Waters, who noticed that his neighbors were dumping all kinds of refuse, including old washing machines, into a hole on his property, yet it never filled up.
The Depth and Anomalies: Mel tried to measure the depth using fishing line. He tied together spools until he had an estimated 16 miles of line down, still without hitting the bottom. While near the hole, his radio acted strangely, picking up old-time music and a baseball game played 30 years prior, suggesting a temporal anomaly. Mel also claimed his dog and local birds would not go near the pit.
The Resurrection: In one of the most outlandish claims, Mel recounts how a neighbor’s deceased dog was thrown down the hole, only to be seen running through the woods the next day with its collar on, though it acted as if it didn’t know the neighbor.
Government Intervention and Legal Threats
After Mel first called into Art Bell’s show, he returned home to find the military had sealed off his property.
The Warning: A man in plain clothes approached Mel and told him he couldn’t enter his own property, citing a fake “plane crash”. The agent then threatened that if Mel pressed the issue, the government “could find a drug factory or something” on his land.
The Deal: Mel was eventually contacted by an intelligence agency and offered a deal: $2 million to leave the country, never come back, and sell the property.
The Magical Finale
Years later, Mel called back with another bizarre account, claiming a native tribe led him to a second, metallic-collared hole. After they retrieved a creature Mel described as a “fetal seal with human eyes”, which then retreated back into the hole, Mel was miraculously cured of his esophageal cancer, and every sick person in the nearby village was healed.
The host concludes that the story became so unbelievable—especially the “magic seal fetus that heals cancer”—that Mel was likely no longer able to maintain the hoax, leading to the abrupt end of his calls to Art Bell.
