Floetry—the ingenious blend of spoken word and soul crafted by Marsha Ambrosius (“The Songstress”) and Natalie Stewart (“The Flossist”)—was the sound of Neo Soul harmony in the early 2000s. Their hits like “Say Yes” resonated deeply, yet behind the flawless artistry was a turbulent, decade-long storm of professional disagreements and devastating personal betrayals.
The story of Floetry is a cautionary tale of a creative partnership that, despite its brilliance, was ultimately destroyed not by musical trends, but by a catastrophic breakdown of trust and friendship.

The First Split: Integrity Versus Ambition
The cracks in the foundation appeared by 2006. Floetry, with two critically acclaimed albums, was a devoted fan-favorite, but the relationship between Marsha and Natalie had devolved into what Marsha later called a “hot stanking mess.”
The initial conflict centered on their manager, Julius Irving III, who pushed for a more hip-hop-oriented sound to reach a wider audience. Natalie strongly opposed this, determined to protect what she called the “integrity and essence of Floetry.” The disagreement escalated, and Natalie tried to fire Irving. Marsha, however, sided with the manager and eventually signed a solo deal with Aftermath Entertainment.
Natalie felt blindsided and deeply betrayed, claiming Marsha had “sold out” and held the group “ransom” for her own selfish gains. She further alleged that Marsha and Irving worked to blacklist her in the U.S., making it nearly impossible for her to book shows or continue her career.
Marsha, however, offered a drastically different, deeply personal explanation for the separation. She claimed her choice to leave was driven by concern for Natalie’s safety, stating that Natalie was trapped in a dangerous and abusive relationship. Marsha recalls witnessing her friend physically and emotionally deteriorate, describing a moment at their last UK show where seeing Natalie with her boyfriend left her crying in the bathroom, unsure how to help. For Marsha, stepping away was the only way to protect herself from the emotional toll of witnessing her sister’s suffering.
The Failed Experiment: The “Remix Tour”
Following the initial split, Marsha attempted to keep the Floetry brand alive, but her approach caused immediate controversy. In 2007, she launched the Floetry Remix Tour, controversially replacing Natalie Stewart with singer and actress Amanda Seals (then known as Amanda Diva).
The tour was plagued with problems. Fans, often uninformed of the lineup change, were furious to see Amanda on stage instead of Natalie. During one performance in Washington D.C., some audience members reportedly turned their backs in protest. Amanda Seals later described the situation as “dishonest,” claiming Marsha never properly introduced her to the audience and seemed to be setting her up for failure. The tension between the new partners grew, with Seals alleging that Marsha had even attempted to physically fight her before a show in Atlanta.
Meanwhile, Natalie’s likeness was still being used in promotional materials, forcing her to publicly clarify that she was not part of the tour. The fierce fan backlash and internal discord made it clear that the Floetry Remix concept was a failure. The planned album was abandoned, forcing both original members to commit fully to their solo careers.
The Final Collapse: Betrayals on the Reunion Tour
After years of separation and failed attempts at reconciliation, hope surged in December 2014 when Marsha invited Natalie on stage in London for an impromptu performance. This moment led to a private meeting and the announcement of a full reunion tour for 2015.
However, the foundation of the reunion was rotten with unresolved issues and new betrayals.
1. The Managerial Betrayal: For Marsha, the first sign of trouble was Natalie’s choice of a tour manager: a mutual friend with whom Marsha had previously shared an intimate relationship that tragically ended in a miscarriage. Marsha felt the decision was “deliberately cruel,” as Natalie was fully aware of the painful history. The situation became more agonizing when Natalie allegedly claimed she had suffered a miscarriage herself to “bond” with Marsha, only to later admit the claim was a lie.
2. The Personal Attack: The deepest cut came when Marsha overheard voicemails from male band members making crude comments about her past sexual history. While she initially dismissed it as “locker room talk,” she discovered a later message that changed everything: Natalie was agreeing with the men, offering devastatingly crass, personal comments about Marsha. Marsha also reportedly learned that Natalie had been sharing intimate details about her personal life, a betrayal that went far beyond professional rivalry.
3. The Pregnancy Indifference: The final breaking point occurred in 2016 during the second leg of the reunion tour. Marsha discovered she was pregnant and kept the news private. When she finally told Natalie, expecting support, the reaction was coldly indifferent: “Oh, I kind of figured that out on my own.” There was no joy, no celebration, only emotional distance. This lack of support during such a vulnerable, significant time was the definitive end.
By August 2016, the reunion tour concluded, and the group was finished for good. Marsha later reflected, “We’ll never be cool because she’ll never be there for me like a friend should be.”
Floetry’s legacy is a bittersweet complexity. Their music remains timeless, a beloved sound that redefined a genre. But their story is a haunting testament to the fact that creative genius and raw talent alone cannot survive the destructive force of broken trust and personal turmoil. Though they occasionally share a stage for nostalgic performances, Natalie’s simple, final verdict sums up their relationship: “We’re not friends. But that’s my sister.” The harmony of Floetry is forever shadowed by the deep personal discord that tore their sisterhood apart.
