Her voice is instantly recognizable on one of the biggest hits of the 2000s: Sean Paul’s “I’m Still in Love with You.” The woman behind that hypnotic, sultry sound is Christine Chin, better known as Sasha (or Sasha Mani). But her story is not one of musical persistence; it is a dramatic tale of walking away from fame, fortune, and a thriving international career for a spiritual path.
From Queens to Dancehall Stardom
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1974, Christine Chin moved to Queens, New York, at five years old. By age 11, she was already writing her own rhymes, influenced by rappers like Salt-N-Pepa and Shelley Thunder. Her big break came unexpectedly during a Shabba Ranks performance, where the Dancehall legend invited her on stage to dance.
Sasha soon dove headfirst into the industry with the track “Kill the Raw.” However, it was her 1998 hit, “Dat Sexy Body,” that transformed her from an underground sensation into a mainstream force, exposing her to the American hip-hop market. But as her star rose, she felt the industry was “eating her alive,” demanding “more sexuality, more controversy” and forcing her to be “willing to cross the line.”
The Phenomenon of “I’m Still in Love with You”
The defining moment of her career came in 2003 with the collaboration that became a global phenomenon. When Sean Paul approached her for “I’m Still in Love with You,” her haunting vocals helped the song shoot to number six in the UK and number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Sasha’s magnetic presence in the music video, along with her other hits like “Run Away with Me” and “Wine Gal Wine,” brought her massive wealth and recognition. She was working with top producers and receiving lucrative contracts from Europe, Africa, and Dubai.
Despite the money and fame, Sasha felt an emptiness inside. She began to “really reflect on me, Karen Christina Chin, not Sasha.”
Trading Career Suicide for Spiritual Peace
In 2008, Sasha made a decision that sent shockwaves through the entire music industry: she announced she was transitioning from secular music to gospel, becoming Sister Sasha. This was a complete spiritual transformation that included abandoning every song that made her famous, including “I’m Still in Love with You” and “Dat Sexy Body.”
Fans were devastated, and industry insiders called it “career suicide.” However, Sasha didn’t care. She explained that if she had wanted fame or money, she would have stayed in secular music, where promoters were still offering top dollar for her hits. She turned them all down, dedicating her voice exclusively to worship.
Her commitment to faith was later echoed by another Dancehall Queen, Lady Saw (Marion Hall), who underwent baptism and became Minister Marion Hall in 2015, making the identical choice.
Today, Sister Sasha continues her gospel ministry, performing with the Beauty of Holiness Gospel Band and releasing tracks with Christian themes. Her estimated net worth is a fraction of what it could have been had she remained in secular music. But for the woman who once sang about toxic love, she shows no signs of returning, having traded fortune for fulfillment and secular success for spiritual peace.
